Note: VyMail is no longer maintained or supported. I will post the source code as soon as I have time to clean it up a bit.

VyMail was a Blackberry application that provides a Visual Voicemail interface to the third-party voicemail service YouMail. You will need to sign up there first before this application will be useful. Please note that VyMail is in no way affiliated with YouMail. It simply uses their data for access on Blackberry devices.

    Download

    Version: 0.8.3.5 beta
    Released: 2/9/2009
    Download:

Requirements: Blackberry OS v4.2 or greater.

    Instructions

    • Install using the OTA link.
    • Launch the application
    • Press the menu key and select Options.
      • Enter your phone number and YouMail PIN here.
      • Press the escape key and be sure to save your changes.
    • That’s it. If you entered valid sign in data your messages should appear momentarily (if you have any).

    Limitations

    • The Verizon Storm 9530 OS version 4.7.0.75 and 4.7.0.76 currently have a major flaw that doesn’t allow the phone to play through the speakerphone. If you are running this OS you’ll want to make sure that the default audio output is through the handset (Options->Play audio through, select ‘Handset’).
    • There is no way to mark a message as “unread”. This is a limitation of YouMail itself.

    FAQ

    1. Will this run on my phone?

If you have a Blackberry running OS version 4.1 or greater.

This should include most phone models with a trackball, and with a model number of 8100 or greater. This includes the Pearl, 8800 series, Curve, Bold and Storm.

To check your version number, on your blackberry choose the “Options” icon, and select “About”. The first version number you see is the OS version (not the platform number, which is shown just to the right of the OS version).

    2. I can’t hear anything when I play messages!

If you using a BlackBerry storm from Verizon, there is a major flaw in OS v4.7.0.75. You will be unable to play your messages through the speakerphone, and will need to use the handset speaker. To make sure that the default audio output is set to play through the handset, in VyMail, select “Options”, and under “Play audio through”, make sure “Handset” is selected in the drop down.

There is also a problem playing audio to a Bluetooth device with some 8xxx model Blackberry devices. There is currently no work-around for this.

    3. Why are the message times listed are off by a few hours?

You haven’t set your time zone correctly in YouMail. From the YouMail website, select the My Account link in the top navigation bar, then choose “Other Settings” from the list on the left, and set the correct time zone. Or visit the Other Settings page directly by clicking this link.

    Troubleshooting

    • I’m using a Blackberry Storm and I can’t get rid of the keyboard taking up half of the display.
This is because the application is running in compatibilty mode. To fix it, open your Blackberry options (NOT the VyMail options screen, but the options screen for the Blackberry itself). Select advanced options, then applications. Scroll down and highlight VyMail, then click the menu key and choose Disable Compatibility Mode. The keyboard will no longer be displayed.
    • I’m not able to download my messages. All I see is *No voicemail*.

The first thing to do is to open VyMail, press the menu key, and select About. The last message on the screen should start with “Last result” followed by some information. That will generally be one of the following:

      • Missing sign in data
You have not yet entered your YouMail sign in data into the options screen. Open VyMail, press the menu key, and choose options, and enter the phone number and PIN number you use to sign in to YouMail.
      • Invalid PIN
The PIN number you entered is incorrect. When entering your PIN, be sure you do not hold the ALT or SHIFT keys, as this field defaults to numeric entry automatically.
      • Sign in data changed
You’ve recently changed your sign in data, and VyMail hasn’t attempted to contact the YouMail servers yet. Press the menu key and choose “Sync now” to force an update. If the message remains for more than a few minutes, try resetting your device by pulling the battery. If it still remains, make sure that your phone number is entered correctly.
      • Invalid phone number or Unregistered phone number
The phone number you entered is wrong. Make sure there is not a “1″ preceding the number entry. This must be the number you signed up to YouMail with (the same number you sign into their website with). There need not be any parenthesis or spaces.
      • Retrieved messages successfully
VyMail has successfully retrieved your messages. If you are still seeing *No voicemail*, then you may not have any messages available. Check the YouMail website for messages there. If there are none, you probably did not set up your phone correctly to forward your unanswered calls. The YouMail website has directions on how to do this.
      • Insufficient coverage to contact server
Your device is reporting that it doesn’t currently have sufficient network access to make an HTTP request. Ensure that you are in an area where you are getting data coverage.
      • Exception signing in: no application instance
Make sure the application permission settings are set correctly for VyMail. On your device go to options, then advanced options, then applications, then scroll to VyMail, click the menu key and choose edit permissions, and ensure that that everything is set to allow. You may need to restart your phone.
      • Exception: Local connection timed out after ~ 120000 or Exception signing in: null
The application was unable to reach the YouMail servers. You may need to alter the Connection type setting in VyMail options. In most cases this can safely be left to auto. If you are using a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES), you may need to set this to TCP.
      • HTTP request returned Internal Server Error or Invalid data returned attempting action:
If you are using a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES), it may be blocking your connection to the YouMail server. In the VyMail options, try setting your connection type to TCP.
    • I get the message javax.microedition.media.MediaException: Error initializing media.
VyMail uses your SD card or device memory to store the mp3 files it downloads from YouMail. If your Blackberry is set to mass storage mode, these areas won’t be accessible to VyMail and you will receive this error. You must either disconnect your device from your computer or docking station, or you can disable mass storage mode. To do this, open your Blackberry options, select memory or media card (depending on your Blackberry model), and change Audo Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected to either no or prompt.
    • I don’t want to use this anymore. How can I remove it?
You can delete the VyMail application from your Blackberry device by selecting options (NOT the options screen in VyMail, but the main Blackberry options, which should be an icon on your home screen), then choose advanced options, then applications, highlight VyMail, press the menu key, and choose Delete. Your device will need to restart to complete the removal process. If you would like to stop using the YouMail service as well, they provide directions on how to cancel the call forwarding settings on at their website.
